“We had a great backing”

Manager James McPake watched Dundee record back to back home wins for the first time since May 2018 with a victory over Ayr United in the first home Ladbrokes Championship match of the season.

The manager spoke to DeeTV following the win and said of the match, “I think we started very well, but it looked like as they came into the game, something that we need to get right is that when teams get it up the park, it changes the momentum of the game and we looked a bit uncomfortable for a spell when we shouldn’t have been.”

“We had a great backing, we had people right behind us but it’s early in what we are trying to do, delighted we came through it but the performance for 25 minutes in the first half was below where we have been and we need to get that right and quite quickly.”

“When we have comfortable possession in a game at times we are overplaying. We want to play, of course we do, but it’s about taking that wee risk maybe. In the final third in particular we were trying things at times but we just need to be a bit more clinical with that final pass but when something does go against us we need to go back to being positive.”

The conditions went from a fine sunny day to a torrential downpour at the half time break and asked if any changes were required to counter the change in conditions, James said it wasn’t due to the condition but more the quality he had available on the bench to change the match, “We had a real strong bench which is the first time we’ve had that this season. When things aren’t going to plan, especially at home when you need to win games and you’ve got a very good crowd that’s expecting of you, you need to try and make changes to influence the game and I thought the substitutions did that.”

Andrew Nelson came off the bench to grab the winner, and his manager was delighted for him, “I thought he was excellent as well when he came on. He feel unfortunate, whoever doesn’t play when you play 2 up front, the one left out is going to be disappointed. I love working with Nella, he’s a great boy and you know what you are going to get from him. His goal was great but his willingness to get after the ball and get us up the pitch was great as well.”
