A Chris Kane double, as well as a Jordan Piggott own goal and Blair Alston’s strike consigned Dundee to defeat against St Johnstone last month.
The visitors had the better of the play in the opening stages, but a series of corners were all dealt with by the Dundee backline. A free kick from 20 yards presented Saints with the first clear cut chance of the game, but Liam Craig didn’t trouble Elliott Parish with his low strike.
Moments later, the Dee lost Lewis Spence to injury, and Jordan Piggott entered the action 18 minutes into the match for his debut.
Saints made their pressure pay after 24 minutes when Steven Anderson chested the ball into Murray Davidson, whose shot spun off of the debutant Piggott and into the net.
Dundee’s response was nearly instant as Simon Murray picked out Roarie Deacon, but he was denied twice, first by Mannus and then by a Saints defender.
Deacon conceded a free kick 20 yards from goal and was booked for his troubles. Scott Tanser saw his fine strike come back off the post. From this, Dundee broke and Deacon was again denied by Mannus.
Saints doubled their lead eight minutes before the break through Chris Kane. MacLean poked the ball away from Josh Meekings on the by line, allowing Alston to square the ball for Kane, who tucked it away from close range.
Steven Caulker nearly reduced the deficit when he connected with a Deacon free kick, but Mannus touched the header round the post.
To their credit, Dundee were trying to rallied when Simon Murray was sent through on goal only to be stopped by a challenge by Tanser as he ran into the box.
Murray, along with the entire Dundee support, were claiming for a penalty but referee Thomson was having none of it
Sofien Moussa replaced Cammy Kerr at half time as Dundee looked for a route back into the game. A series of early second half corners for the Dee didn’t lead to a clear-cut chance. Jon Aurtenetxe picked out A-Jay Leitch-Smith with a deep cross, but his downward header was kept out by Mannus.
Two goals in two minutes ended any hopes of an unlikely comeback. The first saw Blair Alston fire home after Parish had denied Kane, and the second saw Kane fire a high shot into the net to give Saints a four-goal lead.
A goal line clearance from Steven Caulker denied Kane a hat trick after he had lifted the ball over Parish. Faissal El Bakhtaoui had the final chance of the game, but his drive from 25 yards swerved wide.

St Johnstone’s Season So Far
St Johnstone’s season started way back in June when they met Lithuania side FK Trakai in the first qualifying round of the Europa League and after a 2-1 defeat at home in the first leg and a 1-0 defeat in Vilnius, disappointingly exited the competition 3-1 on aggregate.
Qualification for Europe meant a bye to the knock out stages of the Betfred Cup but it was another early exit for The Saints when they crashed out 3-0 to Partick Thistle at McDiarmid Park.
The start to their Ladbrokes Premiership campaign has been superb and they come to Dens unbeaten in the first five games. Saints stormed to the top of the league by winning their first three games against Kilmarnock, Motherwell and Partick and followed that up with an excellent 1-1 draw at n/
Celtic Park.
Tommy Wright won the August manager of the month while Michael O’Halloran, on loan from Rangers picked up the player of the month and he continued to be the key man after the international break when he was on target again in the 1-1 draw at home to Hibernian.
The following week Saints travelled to Dens and lost 3-2 for their first Premiership of the season but followed that up with 2-1 win over Hamilton at home.
However Saints didn’t win again for another seven matches until they defeated Hibs 2-1 at Easter Road in November.
December saw St Johnstone defeat Hamilton at the SuperSeal and Rangers at Ibrox and draw with Hearts and Ross County before the loss to Dundee at the end of the month.
Upon returning from the winter break, St Johnstone knocked Albion Rovers out of the Scottish Cup before losing away to Hearts in the next round.
In the Premiership The Saints also lost to the Jambos at Tynecastle as well as defeats to Partick and Motherwell. They got back on track with a 0-0 draw at Celtic Park, which caused Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers to question their desire before a 2-0 win over Ross County in Perth.
McDiarmid survived the ‘beast from the east’ snow blizzard to host Rangers but the Ibrox men headed back west with all three points after a 4-1 win.
In their rearranged fixture against Kilmarnock last The Saints lost 2-0 at Rugby Park meaning but bounced back with a 4-0 victory at Dens.
St Johnstone went into the split with a win (against Hamilton), two draws (against Hibs and Motherwell) and a defeat to Aberdeen to find themselves in the bottom six for the first time in seven years.
