Celtic – Fast Facts

  • The first match between the clubs was Dundee’s second ever game on August 19th 1893 at West Craigie Park which Celtic won 4-1
  • Dundee and Celtic have faced each other three times in major cup finals, the 1925 Scottish Cup Final, the 1967 League Cup Final and the 1973 League Cup Final
  • Dundee’s record defeat is 11-0 to Celtic on October 26th 1895 at Celtic Park.
  • Between 1899 and 1903 Celtic played in vertical green and white stripes as opposed to the modern day horizontal ones
  • Celtic Park is the largest football stadium in Scotland and the seventh largest stadium in Britain
  • Dundee’s 1973 League Cup winning captain Tommy Gemmell scored in the 1967 European Cup for Celtic when they beat Internazionale to become the first British to win the Champions Cup
  • Celtic won the BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year award in 1967
  • Dundee met Celtic five times in the Scottish Cup semi-finals in the 1970s
  • Dundee manager Paul Hartley played for Celtic between 2007 and 2009 winning all three domestic competitions; two SPL titles (2006/07, 2007/08), one Scottish Cup (2006/07) and one League Cup (2008/09)
  • The Scottish Football Hall of Fame includes two players who have played for Dundee and Celtic, namely Tommy Gemmell and Jimmy Johnstone as well as Gordon Strachan who played for The Dee and managed The Hoops and Charlie Nicholas who played for Celtic and turned out for Dundee in Jim Duffy’s testimonial in December 1987
  • Dundee last beat Celtic at Dens in September 1988 thanks to a Tommy Coyne goal in a 1-0 win and last won at Celtic Park in May 2001 when a Fabian Caballero gave The Dee a 2-0 win
