Last Meeting

The last time that Dundee faced Bolton Wanderers in a pre season friendly was in August 1995 as The Trotters prepared for their first ever season in the English Premier League after winning the Division One Play-Off Final at Wembley in May.

Bolton came to Dens with former Arab Mixu Paataleinan, future Arab Owen Coyle and future Celts Alan Thompson and Alan Stubbs in their side while Dundee’s team included a young Neil McCann playing alongside Jim Duffy, Ray Farningham, Morten Weighorst, Dusan Vrto, Ian Anderson, George Shaw, Gerry Britton,  Paul Tosh and Jim Hamilton.

A crowd of 3,000 turned up at Dens on Wednesday evening for Dundee’s only pre season game at home that year and having scored 10 in their previous match up at Forres Mechanics, The Dee had to be content with just two in a 2-2 draw.

Dundee’s goals came from Jim Hamilton and Gerry Britton and current manager Neil McCann was involved in both goals.

Bolton Wanderers’ Season So Far

Bolton’s pre season has been beset with off field issues centered around a winding up order for the parent company and the non payment of players bonuses for winning promotion from League One last season.

Despite all this Phil Parkinson took his side to non league Chorley last Saturday for their first pre season game and were given a tough run out. The Trotters had to overcome a two-goal first-half deficit to defeat ten-man Chorley at Victory Park and lift the Harold Taylor Memorial Trophy to get their pre-season campaign off to a winning start.

The hosts raced into a an early lead through Terry Gornell before Marcus Carver doubled the lead shortly, but captain Andy Teague saw red just before half time.

However, Wanderers, who fielded two different XIs in each half, claimed the victory thanks to an imperious second-half display and goals from Harry Brockbank (2) and Ryan White.

Bolton then came north for two games in Scotland, the first of which was a friendly against Arbroath at Gayfield on Tuesday. Like against Dundee last Saturday, the Red Litchies put up a good show against Bolton but it was the visitors who took the lead just after the half hour when Adam Le Fondre dusted himself down to fire home a penalty after he had been fouled in the box,

Arbroath however leveled just a minute later when former Dee Steven Doris was brought down by Bolton keeper Mark Howard and then scored his second penalty in four days.

Bolton regained the lead eight minutes after the break when Connor Hall’s cross was deflected into the net and like the Dark Blues, The Trotters departed Gayfield with a 2-1 win.
