Ryan Sweeney spoke to the broadcast media ahead of this Sunday’s trip to Celtic Park and is looking for to the test that awaits him and his team mates.
Central defender Ryan had to wait for his debut having missed the final Premier Sports Cup match due to isolating as a close contact. His debut came as a 39th minute substitute against St. Mirren last weekend but the defender slotted in seamlessly and put in a fine performance.
He said of the match on Sunday, “It will be a real tough test to be fair. Obviously the quality they have in their side. The size of the club as well.”
“We are not just going to make up the numbers. We are not going there for a day out. We are looking to build on a decent result last Saturday and go there and try win the game.”
“I know they have lost the opening game but you look at the size of the club, the success they’ve had and the quality they have in their side today. It’s a real big ask for us but we are going there to try and win the game and get our first win of the season so it’s important for us.”
“The lads who have come back in from isolation have had a full week now and building up for the game. We have done some work on them and their strengths and what they are going to bring but also how we can hurt them so it’s been a real good week.”
Team news
Danny Mullen and Cammy Kerr will miss out through injury while Max Anderson is suspended.
Stats | Dee Archive
As we dive into the stats behind this weekend’s match against Celtic, it’s safe to say, it isn’t pretty reading.
In league competition only, we have locked horns 286 times, winning just 52, drawing 56 and losing 178. Our travels to Celtic Park haven’t been as stellar either.
This will be our 121st match against them on their home turf. In the previous 120 occasions, our record reads: won-11 drawn-25 and lost 84. More grim reading – we are currently on a streak of 32 games without a win against Celtic in the league, with our last victory happening in Glasgow back in 2001! It’s grim reading but it is what it is.
Now, let’s take away all that negativity and look back on a rare Dundee victory. I’m fact, let’s look back at our very first victory over Celtic which happened to occur at Celtic Park on the 20th February, 1897. It was Dundee’s last game of the season which nowadays, would never happen at the start of the year but unlike now, we only played 18 matches.
Joe Clark was the man to put the ball into the net when he pounced with 30 seconds left to tuck the goal away. It was his tenth goal of the campaign.
