VICTORY AT GALABANK FOR RESERVES

Dundee will now have to wait for results elsewhere after moving back to the top of the SPFL Reserve league with victory away to Annan Athletic.

The match was Dundee’s final league fixture of the season and moved them into 1st position but with Queen’s Park sitting 4 points behind with two games in hand it remains to be seen if Dundee will be crowned Champions.

It was a young Dundee side who travelled South to Galabank with only Craig Wighton and Leighton McIntosh in the squad with first team experience and they had to contend with very windy conditions.

With the wind blowing a gale, especially in the first half, it was difficult for the young Dundee team to play their usual style with the ball on the ground but they dug in and battled well.

Calum Brodie started in the goal behind a back four made up of fullbacks Scott Mollison and Ben Sivewright and center backs Cammy Kerr and John Black. In midfield, Connor Macleod and Lee Cameron played wide of Thomas Carberry and Calvin Colquhoun with Wighton and McIntosh up top.

The first chance of the match fell to Dundee after ten minutes of play. Carberry played a through ball to Cameron but Annan keeper Alex Mitchell saved well.

Mitchell was called into action again soon after when Wighton headed down the left and fired a shot in but again the Annan number one was equal to it.

The next chance would see Mitchell beaten and it was McIntosh who found the net. He ran onto a through ball before finishing and giving Dundee the lead.

The home side’s best effort of the half came from a free kick but Dundee keeper Brodie pulled off a good save to ensure a half time lead.

After the break, Dundee started on the front foot. With the wind dying down they managed to get the ball down and take control of the game. Wighton had the ball in the net but the referee pulled the play back for a foul in the build up and awarded a free kick to Dundee.

Wighton was soon testing the Annan defence again and despite looking like he was fouled he kept his feet and dinked the keeper only to see the ball hit the bar.

Annan could have been level with their best chance of the match when a corner turned into a scramble in the Dundee box but The Dark Blues managed to clear after the ball had come back off the crossbar.

Dundee doubled their lead when Colquhoun found the net. He won the ball in midfield and took a touch before driving a shot in at the far corner.

The victory was complete with 11 minutes remaining when a cross from the left was only cleared as far as Wighton on the edge of the box, he took a touch and made no mistake, curling the ball into the net.
