Everyone at Dundee Football Club was saddened to learn of the death of former player Sammy Cox who died yesterday aged 91 in Canada.
Samuel Richmond Cox was born in Darvel, Ayrshire on April 13th 1924 and started his football career with Queens Park in 1941 before turning professional with Third Lanark
In 1944 Cox joined Dundee as they returned for their World War 2 abeyance and scored the winner on his debut in the second game of the season in a 2-1 win over Aberdeen at Dens in front of 13,000.
Dundee had rejoined the wartime Scottish League North-East Division which was split into two series from August to December and then from January to May. Sammy played 16 times in the First Series which Dundee won after the ten clubs (including Aberdeen, Dundee United and Rangers) played each other twice and 16 times again as Dundee finished fourth in the Second Series.
Dundee also finished as runners-up in the Scottish League North-East Supplementary Cup, losing to Aberdeen in the Final but Sammy picked up a winners medal when The Dee won the Forfarshire Cup after beating Dundee United in the semi-final and Arbroath in the Final.
Dundee returned to Scottish League B Division the following season having been relegated on the eve of War and Cox played 16 times as Dundee ran out comfortable Championship winners by ten points by ten points from east Fife.
The Scottish League deemed the 1945/46 season unofficial due to all the players still being demobbed from the army and Dundee had to win the B Division the following season to get promotion.
Sammy wasn’t there for the second title party as he had moved the Rangers in the summer of 1946 where he would become a legend. He would play 370 times for Rangers, scoring twice and would win three League Championships, three Scottish Cups and one League Cup and was part of the first Rangers side to win the treble. He won 25 caps for Scotland, 13 for the Scottish League and was inducted into the Rangers Hall of Fame.
After his Rangers career, Cox had a spell with East Fife before emigrating to Canada in 1958. He played in the Canadian National Soccer League for Toronto Ulster United in 1958, Toronto Sparta in 1959 and was player-coach of Stratford Fischers in 1960. He also played for the Ontario All-Stars against West Bromwich Albion in 1959. As of 2014, Cox was living a nursing home in Stratford, Ontario and passed away after a short illness.
Everyone at Dundee Football Club would like to pass on our condolences to Sammy’s friends and family and our thoughts are with them at this sad time.
