Preview: Heart of Midlothian v Dundee

Introduction

Dundee travel to Tynecastle to face Hearts ahead of this Sunday’s 3pm kick-off.

Steven Pressley’s side head into this after a 1-1 draw with St Johnstone on Wednesday.

Hearts come into this game full of confidence following a 3-1 away win over Hibs in the Edinburgh derby on Thursday.

The experts at Andy’s Bet Club will break down proceedings ahead of Sunday’s clash.

Match Preview

Charlie Reilly looked to have given Dundee all three points on Wednesday against St Johnstone after finding the back of the net in the 87th minute.

That was before Josh Fowler levelled proceedings in the 90th minute to share the spoils at Dens Park.

Hearts, by contrast, arrive on the back of a 3-1 win away at Hibs in the derby, their fourth victory in five outings across all competitions.

Only two points separate the sides ahead of Sunday’s 16:30 kick-off.

Dundee Form Guide

Dundee’s 1-1 draw with St. Johnstone left them without a win in their last two league matches, following a 1-2 home defeat to Hibs.

Prior to that, they had won 2-0 away at Dundee United in the derby, sandwiched by a 3-0 League Cup defeat to Aberdeen and a 2-0 league win over the same opponents.

Joe Westley has been the main source of goals this season, scoring twice from an xG of 2.33.

Ethan Hamilton has been busy from midfield in terms of attacking output, taking eleven shots this season but landing only one on target for an xG of 0.80 and no goals.

Dundee’s build-up has relied heavily on centre-backs Ryan Astley and Owen Bevan for progressing the ball into dangerous areas.

Hearts Form Guide

Wouter Vrancken’s Hearts are riding a five-game unbeaten run in all competitions, which includes a derby win over Hibs and qualification for the Europa Conference League against Rapid Vienna over two legs.

James Wilson has been the main focal point of goals for Hearts across all competitions this season, scoring four goals from an xG of only 1.27.

Calvin Miller has three goals from an xG of 1.26. Caludio Braga has taken more shots than either of them (13) but converted just one, for an xG of 1.56.

Tactical Insight

It’s going to be an interesting matchup between Dundee’s centre-back pairing of Owen Bevan and Ryan Astley and the Dundee attack.

James Wilson and Calvin Miller are responsible for seven of Hearts’ 13 goals across all competitions this season, along with Claudio Braga, who contributes heavily to the shot count.

Hearts have a PPDA (passes per defensive action) of 12.96 this season, meaning they make a defensive action for roughly every thirteen opponent passes in the pressing zones, a slightly lower pressing intensity than Dundee’s own figure of 15.08.

Conclusion

Bevan and Astley will have their hands full against a Hearts attack that has spearheaded them to a solid unbeaten run across all competitions.

Steven Pressley’s side have only lost one of their last four in the league; however, giving them the confidence to take something from this game.
