Last Meeting
The Dark Blues treated 619 travelling supporters to the sort of performance fans dream of with a spectacular 5-1 thrashing of Motherwell at Fir Park in February. All the damage was done in the first half during which they shredded the home defence time and again. An own goal by Zak Jules sent the Dee on their way. Although Louis Moult equalised the Dee took charge and rammed in four goals in under 20 minutes. Marcus Haber scored twice, with Mark O’Hara and Craig Wighton helping themselves to a goal apiece while the supporters partied in the South Stand.

Motherwell’s Season So Far
Motherwell opened their season with a 2-0 home defeat to Rangers in a Betfred Cup sectional tie but they qualified from their group as one of the best runners-up after wins against Annan Athletic (3-1), East Stirlingshire (3-0) and Stranraer (3-0).
Having drawn Rangers in the group stage despite being seeded, The Steelmen were then perhaps unlucky to then be paired with Celtic as an unseeded side in the first knock out round of the League Cup and they were soundly beaten 5-0 at Celtic Park to exit the competition.
Before that Motherwell opened their Ladbrokes Premiership campaign with a 2-1 win over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park and the victory was more comprehensive than the score line suggests. They followed that up with a 2-1 win over St Johnstone and then a 2-1 defeat to Rangers before the 0-0 draw with Dundee gave them a solid seven points before the first international break.
Motherwell have consistently been inconsistent since then, with September for example yielding a draw, win, draw, loss sequence. October demonstrated this further by losing 3-0 to Inverness in one game and then beating Ross County 4-1 in the next.
This constant picking up of points however has meant that Motherwell have hovered around the top six rather than the relegation spots but with the league so tight, the recent defeats to Hearts (0-3), Aberdeen (2-7) and Celtic (2-0) will have them looking over their shoulder.
The match against Celtic in December saw glimpses of Motherwell’s potential as they became close to becoming the only Scottish side to defeat the champions this season. The Steelman were 2-0 up, then 3-2 down, then 3-3 before a late Tom Rogic goal give The Bhoys victory but The Steelmen.
However against Dundee in February they showed their frail side when the Dark Blues blew them away with five goals in the first half at Fir Park and hot on the heels of the 7-2 defeat at Pittodrie, it cost Mark McGhee his job.
Since then new interim manager Steve Robinson, appointed just two weeks after coming in as Mark McGhee’s assistant, has led them to crucial victories over Kilmarnock and Inverness and picked up points in draws with Rangers and Hamilton and these eight points have been enough to get them out of the Premiership play off spot that they briefly occupied.
Now the Dark Blues are the side that sit in 11th but are just two points behind Motherwell so a win for either side will be crucial for their ambitions to stay in the top flight for next season.
