Lyall Cameron Leaves Dundee

Now that the 2024/25 season has ended the club would like to place on record its thanks to Lyall Cameron for his service to Dundee Football Club as he has indicated that he will be leaving the club upon the completion of his contract.

Speaking on his time at the club Lyall said, “It seems a long time ago since I made my competitive debut for the club against Raith in the League Cup at 16. I’ve learnt a lot since then and I am proud to have played as many games as I have for Dundee. I have decided that now is the time to move on, and I want to thank everyone at the club who I’ve worked with over the years. I want to thank the fans who supported me until the very end and the ovation at the last home game was special to me and my family. I was delighted to end my time at Dundee on a high and help the team secure Premiership football next year.”

Lyall signed off his Dark Blue career in impressive form with four goals in his last three games, including a brace in a 2-0 win against St. Johnstone in the final game in Perth, which secured The Dees SPFL Premiership status for next year.

A product of the Dundee youth system, Lyall broke into the first-team picture when he was on the bench for the final Premiership game of the 2018/19 season against St Mirren, but according to interim manager James McPake was unable to make his debut due to a red card to captain Darren O’Dea.

Lyall however only had to wait a couple of months to make his debut after scoring a match winning goal against Brechin in a pre-season friendly, the 16-year-old came off the bench in the first game of the season in a Betfred Cup group stage win at Raith.

After being an unused sub on four occasions Lyall made his home debut in a Scottish Cup tie against Motherwell before making his first start against Dunfermline in the SPFL Championship the following week.

In October 2020 Lyall signed a new three-year deal with the club before joining Peterhead on loan and made a dream debut for the Blue Toon in a 1-0 League Cup win over Dundee United at Tannadice.

Lyall spent the 2021/22 season on loan, firstly back at Peterhead and then with Montrose and it gained him valuable experience to make help an impact at Dens the following year.

The 2022/23 season would prove to be Lyall’s big breakthrough in Dark Blue as The Dee looked to return to the top flight at the first time of asking and by the end of a phenomenal campaign he had an SPFL Championship winners medal in his back pocket. He also won an unprecedented hat-trick of club Player of the Year Awards as he was named the Isobel Sneddon Young Player of the Year, Players Player of the Year and the Andrew De Vries Player of the Year, as well as being named in both the SPFL Championship Team of the Year and the PFA Scotland Championship Team of the Year.

The start of the season saw Lyall score his first goal for The Dee in the opening game against Hamilton Academical in the League Cup and by the end of the season, he had scored 14 goals in 38 appearances, including in the final day title winning 5-3 victory over Queens Park.

Back in the Premiership, Lyall made his top flight debut at home to Motherwell on the opening day and as the Dark Blues reached the top six, Lyall contributed five goals in 36 appearances; one of which, a stunning 40-yard strike away at St Johnstone in March, was named Dundee FC Goal of the Season.

It wasn’t the only accolade Lyall would win as he won the Isobel Sneddon Trophy for DFC Young Player of the Year for the second year running and was nominated for the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year and the Scottish Football Writers Association Young Player of the Year.

Lyall’s performances in the Dark Blue of Dundee also led to international recognition and after making his debut for the Scotland Under-21s against Norway in June 2023, he would go on to win 12 caps in the dark blue of Scotland.

This season Lyall started with a double in the opening game against Bonnyrigg Rose in the Premier Sports group stage and finished the season with that vital double against St Johnstone. In between times he made 41 appearances, scoring 14 times to take his Dundee total to 119 appearances, scoring a dark blue magical number of 33 goals.

Everyone at Dens Park would therefore like to wish Lyall every success in the future.
