Dundee were first on the attack in this Reserve League fixture played at Dens on Tuesday afternoon when Craig Wighton delivered a ball into the box for Steven Doris which was cut out by Morton’s trialist centre half.
The visitors signalled their intent as early as the fifth minute when Michal Habai powered in a header which looked a goal all the way until Dan Twardzik flung himself to his left to keep the ball out. Archie Campbell netted the rebound but was given offside.
The Dark Blues replied with a 30-yard Kyle Benedictus free kick that was tipped over the bar by visiting keeper Derek Gaston. From Cammy Kerr’s corner, James Thomson headed wide.
Twardzik had to look lively again when Marc Fitzpatrick rose to head the ball goalwards, but the Dens keeper dived to his left to smother it.
Dundee were reduced to ten men for a full ten minutes as first Kerr, then Thomson, had to have head wounds bandaged by physio Karen Gibson. In fact, if you didn’t sport a head bandage in the Dens back four you looked a bit out of place.
Morton’s Steven Stirling should have opened the scoring when he was put through by Mark McLaughlin but he somehow managed to send his shot wide.
Morton, did, though, take the lead on 37 minutes when Campbell’s cross was headed in by Habai, who was giving the Dundee defence a torrid time in the air. Four minutes later Campbell himself got on the scoresheet when his drive from 25 yards hit both posts before rolling into the net.
Habai added a third early in the second half with another header before Dundee mounted an amazing comeback.
Neat play between Wighton and Martin Boyle set up Steven Doris to score after 70 minutes and the striker added a second ten minutes later with a header from a corner after the visitor’s keeper had failed to deal with the initial ball into the area.
Substitute Thomas Carberry thought he had drawn Dundee level when he turned home at the back post following a cross from the right but the referee ruled the goal out.
Dougie Imrie had the ball in the net for Morton but like Carberry’s was ruled out, Imrie’s for offside.
Dundee levelled in the final minute when quick thinking saw Cammy Kerr play a short corner to Ben Sivewright who picked out Wighton who headed home from six yards out.
