Greenock Morton | Match Preview

We have played three games in the month of April and still have three games in the month remaining with the next coming on Saturday against Greenock Morton. We have picked up seven points out of nine in April and the team is currently on a six-match unbeaten run and will be looking to take three points on Saturday and extend the unbeaten run to seven matches. Tuesday’s 3-1 win at home to Raith saw us go three points ahead of second place Queen’s Park at the top of the Cinch Championship with four games remaining.

Morton currently in sixth position were also in action on Tuesday night as they defeated Hamilton 2-0 at home. Their win on Tuesday night keeps them in the hunt for a playoff position, only three points behind fourth-place Ayr United. Their win against Hamilton was Morton’s first win in seven matches after previously drawing four matches and losing two. The four draws came against, Ayr, Arbroath, Partick Thistle, and Queen’s Park, with the two defeats coming against Inverness and Ayr.

We last met Morton on the 17th February in Greenock with the home side winning 1-0. The previous two meetings between the sides this season ended 0-0 with neither being able to break the deadlock.

Team News

Jordan McGhee is an injury doubt after coming off injured in the closing stages against Raith on Tuesday night. Cammy Kerr has had a couple more training sessions after missing last Saturday through illness and should return to the squad.

The Manager’s thoughts

“After Tuesday night’s impressive win and performance, we got the players straight away, said well done for the win but the focus was straight away on the next game. So that’s how long we celebrate a win before we focus on the next one.

“I’ve been really impressed by our mentality in the last couple of weeks in the group and we spoke about it again today. Questions were asked about us going to Arbroath, some in my opinion probably being a little bit disrespectful to Arbroath, but we stood up to it and I was really pleased with how we came through it. That point we took was backed up with a really impressive win on Tuesday and we’ve got to keep that mentality and that fight.

“It’s not the first or the second time we are going to be playing Morton, so you know their strengths, you know the areas where we feel we can exploit and it is up to us to impose ourselves on the game again. Morton have had a good season without a doubt and it is up to us to stand up to this next challenge.

“It is always nice to play at home and in front of your home fans, the noise levels the other night were brilliant and I’ve said all along that we are going to need them and need them to stick with us. No doubt in these remaining four games they are going to be the ones that help us get over the line. Saturday coming, after three games in a week, we really need them to be as loud as they possibly can be, supportive, and get the team over the line.

“From a Manager’s point of view, you always want your strikers to be scoring goals, that’s their job and the fact that we win the game on Tuesday with both of them scoring is terrific. They’ve got a good relationship off the pitch and a good relationship on the pitch now and there’s more to come, they need to get better there’s no doubt about that, but they can and they know that themselves. There’s room for improvement, it will be exciting to see where their partnership can go.”

Alex Jakubiak’s thoughts

“Saturday was disappointing, we went into the game believing we could win, we had a great backing with a lot of fans making the journey to support us and we were just a bit disappointed that we couldn’t repay them with a win. But three points on Tuesday made that a good point in the end.

“It seems to be coming together at the moment so hopefully that can continue, you can see there is good link up between me and Zach. Especially with the first goal on Tuesday, I just knew when the ball was going into him and to make a run off him and he carried on as well, so it has worked well for us.

“We’ve played Morton three times this season and not scored against them yet, so that is obviously a starting point. We’re going out to win, so we’re going to need to score to win. Our recent home form has been good, we’ve scored 13 in the last 3, so we want to keep that going into this game as well.

“Every game is different, we are always preparing for that specific game, and nothing changes, we don’t look ahead to the other fixtures or any other fixtures around us, we just focus on ourselves and what we can do, that’s what we’ve been doing all season.”
