César Garza has been representing his country at the Under-20 World Cup in Chile over the past few weeks. The Mexican side have made it out of the so-called “Group of Death,” defeated the hosts Chile, and now face Argentina in the quarter-finals.
On escaping the tough group, César said:
“It has been a really tough tournament because we were in the group of death, but we managed to have a really good game against Brazil, then got a tie against Spain even though they had more possession of the ball, and finished with a solid performance beating Morocco.”
César played 83 minutes in the opening World Cup fixture — a 2-2 draw with Brazil — before completing the full 90 in another 2-2 draw, this time against Spain. He then started in the 1-0 victory over Morocco, before being substituted in the 60th minute.
After defeating the hosts in the round of 16, César said:
“We played against the home team, Chile, with the stadium at maximum capacity all cheering for them — and beat them 4-1.”
On playing in such a major tournament, he added:
“I’ve really enjoyed my time in the World Cup, especially because of all the game time I’ve already had — with two 90-minute matches in friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Colombia, and then starting all three group matches.”

The young Mexican midfielder was an unused substitute in the win over Chile after receiving a yellow card earlier in the tournament, but he is now available for the upcoming quarter-final.
“I’m really excited for the game against Argentina because we’ve been receiving a lot of support from all of Mexico, and there’s a big rivalry with Argentina. It would be really special to get the win and be among the last four teams in the tournament,” said Cesar.
The quarter-final between Mexico U-20 and Argentina U-20 takes place on Sunday, 12 October at 00:00 BST (UK time). Good luck to César and the young Mexican side!
