Dee go viral ‘outta nowhere’

When the rebound from Greg Stewart’s shot on Saturday fell to Gary Harkins during the first half against Motherwell, few would have been able to predict that only a few seconds later something would occur which would see Dundee Football Club featured in the news all over the world.

After Gary tucked the ball away, Jim McAlister was on hand to help him celebrate with an RKO wrestling move. It was a nod to the internet trend which swept the online world last week that saw WWE superstar Randy Orton placed in humorous videos with the WWE commentators over the top proclaiming the RKO was “outta nowhere”.

On Saturday evening, after posting the clip on the clubs official Youtube channel and a brand new Vine account, Dundee FC was on everyone’s lips as the clip went ‘viral’ being posting all around the world.

Shortly after, the superstar himself gave the club his approval as he posted to his 3.6million followers regarding the celebration and Jim and Gary’s need to work on their execution of the move – “nice celebration, work on your form @dundeefconline #rko”

News websites in Australia, Japan and India amongst others plus a number of huge website in the United States, including Bleacher Report, Fox Sports, USA Today and the Washington Post ran the story which helped drive the incredible amount of views which Gary and Jim’s celebration continues to rise.

With the video being posted all over, the clubs Vine account showed that it had been looped over 1.7 million times while to Youtube video currently sits at 600,000+ views. Popular Facebook page ‘The Sport Bible’ reposted the video which 3.9 million people have viewed on their page at the time of posting this story.

BBC also ran the story amongst others in the UK press and we estimate over 10 million have watch the 7 second clip.

It seems those in the WWE community approved of the celebration as on Monday morning, WWE Hall of Fame superstar Mick Foley used his twitter account to ‘favourite’ the club’s tweet.

Who knows Randy and Mick might well sit down next Saturday to enjoy the Hamilton game live from Dens Park on Dundee FC Live.

The service which brings action live from Dundee games direct to your home is available for just £5. Following a technical issue with the service on Saturday we unfortunately were unable to bring you the first half at Fir Park. We worked hard through that and did manage to get some people connected to see the second period but we have refunded everyone that paid for the service.
