DEE GO DOWN IN HIGHLANDS

DEE GO DOWN IN HIGHLANDS

Dundee legend of the late sixties and early seventies, Bobby Wilson, was in the Grant Street Park stand to watch the young Dark Blues in Development League action against Inverness Caley Thistle. ?The Dark Blues started well and could have opened the scoring on five minutes when Andy Black flicked the ball over keeper Ryan Esson but fired into the side netting.

?The home side took the lead 10 minutes later when a crossfield pass found Calum Ferguson unmarked on the edge of the box and the striker shot low past Kyle Gourlay in the Dundee goal.

Minutes later, Josh Skelly was unfortunate to see his hit the post with Esson beaten.

Bobby Wilson, a marauding right back himself, would have been impressed with the form of young Sam Dryden in his old position. Dryden was quick in the tackle and always keen to get forward to support the attack.

On the half hour mark Skelly equalised for the Dens men. A move involving Jesse Curran, Dylan Carreiro and Skelly saw the Highlanders fail to clear their lines and Skelly popped up to squeeze the ball past Esson.

Just before half time though, Caley went in front with Ferguson scoring a carbon copy of his first goal and Dundee were dealt a double blow when Skelly had to go off injured to be replaced by Liam Gibb.

The visitors started the second half brightly, with Andy Black shooting narrowly over the bar in the opening minutes and a Matty Allan header being safely gathered by Esson.

Dundee then had to make a second change when Ben Priest was replaced by Greg Warwick, with Cammy Kerr, who had moved from left back to left midfield, then being asked to fill in at centre back.

The changes unsettled what had been a free moving Dundee side who had played a lot of excellent football and they conceded a third in the 75th minute, Caley’s trialist striker showing a great burst of speed to take him past Kerr Waddell and fire into the net from an acute angle.

Almost immediately, Dundee were down at the other end and Carreiro had a good shout for a penalty when he was downed in the box, but the referee saw things differently.

With 13 minutes to go, Kerr was ordered off after a second yellow card. Cammy was extremely unfortunate in this case as his first booking was for complaining to the referee after he was fouled.

The scoreline could have been worse for Dundee but Gourlay pulled off a great save from the home side’s Jason Brown in the dying minutes.?

Dundee: Gourlay, Dryden, Kerr, Waddell, Priest (Warwick 62),Allan, A Black, Curran, Skelly (Gibb 43), Carreiro, J Black. Sub not used: Gallacher.
