DEE FIGHTBACK JUST FAILS

Alloa deservedly took the points in this Reserve League Cup tie at Recreation Park on Monday night despite a late comeback from Gavin Rae’s men.

The Wasps seemed that much quicker and slicker on the artificial surface than the Dark Blues and took the lead after 23 minutes when Lewis Wilson got on the end of a free kick from the right to score from close range.

They could have scored again two minutes later but Ryan Gemmell wasted a good opportunity created for him by winger Graham Forsyth.

Dundee tried to reply through Lee Cameron but the youngster was tackled just as he reached the opposition box.

Nine minutes after the opening goal the home side doubled their advantage when they were awarded a penalty after Sean Bonnett-Johnson was harshly adjudged to have handled when the ball was blasted at him from close range. Ross Caldwell stepped up to coolly send the ball past Dan Twardzik in the Dundee goal.

A great run down the right wing by skipper Cammy Kerr saw him cross the ball for the inrushing Cameron but Wasps keeper Craig McDowall brought off a point blank save from the striker.

Allow went three up five minutes after the break when Caldwell headed home a cross from the right wing.

It almost got worse for Dundee when Wilson headed a free kick inches over Twardzik’s bar.

On 67 minutes Dundee finally got on the scoresheet when Carlo Monti latched onto a long ball from Matt Lockwood and lofted it over the keeper.

Dundee introduced under 19 skipper John Black for Ben Sivewright at that point and, a minute later, Monti sent a drive just wide of McDowall’s left hand post.

Dundee were coming more into the game now as Alloa tired and, 12 minutes from time Josh Skelly came on for Nicky Riley.

Skelly’s first contribution was to fire a low drive across the face of Alloa’s goal.

It was all Dundee now and Monti set up a golden chance for Cameron who was denied again by another point blank McDowall save.

Nine minutes from the end the Dark Blues made it 2-3 when Bonnett-Johnson played a clever ball into Cameron who found the far corner of the net.

Dundee piled on the pressure in the closing stages but couldn’t find the equaliser.
