Dundee v Kilmarnock
Saturday 23rd September – 3pm Kick-Off
Kilmac Stadium
cinch Premiership
We return to the Kilmac Stadium this week after a number of weeks away due to away fixtures and the international break. It will be our first home match since we defeated Hearts 1-0 on the 27th August and the players will be looking for a similar result tomorrow when we welcome Kilmarnock.
The last time Kilmarnock and Dundee faced each other in a league fixture in Scotland’s top flight was on the 6th February 2019, with the game ending in a 2-2 draw. Andrew Nelson netted a double that night for the Dee, while Conor McAleny and Chris Burke scored for Killie.
Fast forward to 2023 and things are very different for both clubs. Kilmarnock under the management of Derek McInnes and Dundee with Tony Docherty at the helm. McInnes and Docherty spent over fifteen years working together at St Johnstone, Bristol City, Aberdeen and Kilmarnock and now they are up against each other for the first time as managers.
Kilmarnock come into this match on the same number of points as The Dee, five points after five matches. Their only win so far came on the opening day of the season at home to Rangers, they have drawn against Hearts and Hibs and lost to Motherwell and Ross County. They have scored four goals and conceded five.
Kilmarnock’s next match after their trip to Dundee is at home to Hearts in the Quarter-Final of the Viaplay Cup, after they knocked out the defending champions Celtic in the previous round.
Killie like ourselves will be looking to have the three points come 5pm on Saturday and be further up the league table.
Although the last league fixture between the sides was in 2019, the last time the sides met was in the cinch Premiership play-off tie on 24th May 2001 that saw the Dee win 2-1 at Rugby Park and win promotion to the Premiership with Kilmarnock being relegated to the Championship.

Tony’s thoughts
“I am very much looking forward to the game this weekend. I’ve been pleased with our performances recently and I just want to turn these good performances into three points and that’s the main objective for Saturday. Kilmarnock have had a good start to the season knocking Celtic out of the cup and beating Rangers. It will be a difficult game, they are a very competitive and organised team, as all Derek’s teams are. It’s a tough opponent, but we are at home. We’ve got to make sure with the home advantage that we’ve got, not just with the team but with the crowd, we make that count for something. We realise the task, but with us being at home we are really looking forward to it.”
Ricki Lamie
“It will be a tough one, Kilmarnock have had a good start in what is a very competitive league. They will be looking to pick up three points on Saturday coming up to Dens. They are a really good team, with a good manager, who are always set up well. They have brought in new signings in the summer and they’ve had some great results so far this season. But we too are looking to pick up three points tomorrow. We’ve spoken a lot as a group about the importance of having a good home record this season. We’ve done this so far and we want to keep building on these results and we are looking for another good home score tomorrow.”
