LATE PENALTY DOWNS DEES

The last time these two sides met Hibs ran out 7-0 winners but the young Dark Blues provided a much sterner test this time around.

At a very blustery Station Park, the visitors began strongly and, from a free kick, Farid El Alagui headed over the bar in the third minute.
Martin Boyle then set up Jordan Sinclair but his shot also flew over the top.

At the other end Josh Skelly and John Black combined to give Lee Cameron a chance but his header was high.

Dundee picked up two bookings in as many minutes with Andy Black and Kerr Waddell both falling foul of referee Ferguson.

The Dark Blues took the lead on 14 minutes. John Black won the ball in midfield and Lee Cameron raced on to a through pass from Josh Skelly. When he was crowded out, Cameron played the ball back to Black who passed it into the net from 18 yards.

Craig Wighton managed to slip the ball across the face of the Hibs goal but Skelly was tackled by Calum Crane as he looked to put the ball in the net.

A poor back pass by Cameron put Boyle through and Ben Priest had no option but to pull him down, giving the visitors a free kick some 20 yards out. From the set piece El Alagui headed over.

Calum Brodie in the home goal deprived Boyle of an equaliser when he got a hand to the striker’s shot and the ball was booted to safety.

Just before the half time whistle Matty Allan got on the end of a Cameron corner but could only shoot wide and there was still time for Wighton to drive the ball across the face of the Hibs goal, but there was no one there to force the ball home.

With a strong wind at their backs Hibs came out all guns blazing and Brodie tipped El Alalgui’s fierce shot over the bar.

Boyle was next to have a go but his shot went wide.

El Alalgui looked certain to score in the Easter Road side’s next raid but Waddell came to the rescue with a superb block.

However, the visitors got the leveller on 58 minutes, Jordan Sinclair picking up a loose ball on the edge of the penalty area and driving it low past Brodie.

Dundee were on the back foot now as the hail added to the wind but Greg Warwick relieved the pressure with a fine run up the left wing.

Ben Priest made a good clearance from Liam Craig as Hibs upped the pressure and Dundee replaced Waddell with Ryan Lamond, with Allan dropping back into central defence.

Hibs had three attempts in the final 10 minutes from Craig, El Alagui and Conner Duthie but it looked as if the young Dens Parkers were going to hold out for a point.

However, six minutes from time Priest was adjudged to have handled in the box and El Alagui sent Brodie the wrong way from the spot kick.

Craig almost added to the lead in the final minute but Brodie diverted his shot round the post.
