Gerry Burrell (1924-2014)

Everyone at Dundee Football Club were saddened to learn of the death of former player Gerry Burrell who passed away peacefully at the age of 90.

Burrell joined Dundee midway through the 1951/52 season and was part of the early Fifties, George Anderson golden era, making 39 appearances and scoring nine times in his three years at Dens.

Born in Portadown on September 6, 1924, Burrell was an outside-right who came to Scotland in 1947 when he joined St Mirren from Dundela and made 121 appearances in Paisley, scoring 36 goals.

Gerry joined Dundee just after the Dark Blues had won the 1951 League Cup and scored on his debut in a 4-3 defeat at Airdrie on December 15th.

Dundee became the first side to retain the League Cup the following season and although Burrell didn’t play in the Final against Kilmarnock, he did make five appearances on the ‘Road to Hampden’ and scored at home against Raith Rovers in a Sectional tie and away at Stirling Albion in the quarter-final.

Burrell also memorably scored in a 3-1 friendly win against the South African national side when they visited Dens in October 1953.

Having made his debut at Broomfield, Burrell made his last appearance for Dundee in a 2-2 draw at the same ground on November 14th 1954. The 5’ 3” nippy winger then moved south of the border to Huddersfield Town and then Chesterfield before hanging up his boots in 1958.

All at Dens Park would like to pass on their condolences to Gerry’s family for their loss.
