Fast facts – Kilmarnock

  • Dundee beat B Division Kilmarnock 2-0 in 1952/53 League Cup Final in front of 51,000 at Hampden thanks to a double from Bobby Flavell
  • Kilmarnock are the oldest professional football club in Scotland having been founded in 1869
  • Kilmarnock, like Dundee have played in all three European competitions (European Cup, Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Cup) with their best performance reaching the Fairs Cup semi in 1967 where they lost out to Leeds United who knocked Dundee out at the same stage a year later
  • The 1st match between the clubs took place at Rugby Park on October 21st 1899 which Killie won 2-1
  • Rugby Park is Kilmarnock’s 5th home ground having previously played matches at The Grange, Holm Quarry, Ward’s Park and the original Rugby Park which was situated nearby in South Hamilton Street
  • Dundee beat Kilmarnock 4-0 at Ibrox in the 1964 Scottish Cup semi-final thanks to goals from Gilzean (2), Penman and McFadzean (o.g.)
  • Dundee have met Kilmarnock in the opening league game of the season on 6 occasions; 1900/01, 1956/57, 1993/94, 2012/13, 2014/15 and 2015/16
  • Dundee and Kilmarnock met in the 1979/80 Anglo-Scottish Cup and after a 1-1 draw at Dens and a 3-3 draw at Rugby Park The Dee progressed on away goals
  • In August 1999, Rugby Park was used (and renamed Premier Park) for a fictitious Scottish Cup semi-final between Kilnockie and Kilmarnock in the Robert Duvall film A Shot at Glory.
  • Dundee assistant manager Gerry McCabe was no. 2 at Kilmarnock to Bobby Williamson when they won the Scottish Cup in 1997
  • Former Dee Alex Totten managed the Ayrshire side  between 1994-1996
  • Kilmarnock played in the first ever Scottish Cup match against Renton in 1973
