Fast Facts – Hamilton Accies

  • Hamilton Academical were formed in 1874 by the Rector and pupils of a local school and joined the Scottish League in November 1987 following the resignation of Renton
  • The sides first met in August 1906 after the First Division was extended to 18 teams and 4th placed Hamilton were promoted and Dundee won 3-1 at Acciesā€™ original ground Douglas Park.
  • Five years later Hamilton knocked Scottish Cup holders Dundee out of the Scottish Cup 3-2 at Douglas Park (before semis were on neutral grounds)
  • The sides met again in the Scottish Cup semi-final in 1925 and after a 0-0 draw at Douglas Park, The Dee won the replay at Easter Road 2-0
  • Hamilton sold Douglas Park to Sainsburyā€™s in 1994 but wrangling over the proceeds and the local council condemning old Douglas Park ensured seven years ground-sharing at Firhill and Cliftonhill where Dundee both faced Accies in the First Division.
  • New Douglas Park finally opened in 2001 and is currently known as The SuperSeal Stadium
  • Almost 100 years ago to the day Dundee defeated Hamilton 3-1 in front of 7000 at Dens thanks to goals from Davie Brown (2) and Tom McCulloch
  • On the last day of the 1986/87 season Dundee defeated already relegated Accies 7-3 at Dens to score 100 goals in all competitions that season
  • Dundee manager Paul Hartley was born in Hamilton and started his playing career at Douglas Park scoring 11 goals in 47 league appearances before joining Millwall for Ā£400,000 in 1996.
  • Hamilton have won the Challenge Cup twice and been runners-up in the Scottish Cup twice.
  • Dundee last won in Hamilton in November 2013 when a 3-1 win was secured on the way to winning the SPFL Championship
  • Dundee only faced Hamilton four times throughout the Forties, Fifties and Sixties
