Dee win Reserve Cup opener

Niall McGinn got a double while Finlay Robertson and Euan Mutale were also on the scoresheet as Dundee won their first Reserve Cup group section match away to Hibernian this afternoon.

The match started in sunshine at the Hibernian Training Centre with the home side enjoying some early pressure but Dundee edged their way back into the match which saw Luke McCowan and Shaun Byrne back in action for the first time since picking up injuries.

The heavens then opened with a torrential downpour as Dundee took control. Robertson and McGinn both fired over before a free kick was given for handball 25 yards out. McGinn curls over the wall and into the net to give Dundee the lead.

Before the half time whistle went, captain Robertson also got himself on the scoresheet. He traded passes with McGinn before curling into the net from the edge of the box.

When the teams reappeared for the second half, the sun was back out and the scoring continued for Dundee.

Luke Strachan picked out McGinn on the right of the box and he cut back inside his man before turning home for his second and Dundee’s third.

The scoring was complete by Euan Mutale who headed home a cross from a young trialist before the heavens opened again.

The match ended in heavy rain but there was still time for Ian Lawlor to pull off a fantastic point blank save to keep the clean sheet intact and ensure Dundee started the group section with a fine 4-0 victory.

Dundee – Lawlor, Martin (Trialist 60′), Strachan, Graham, Donald, Robertson, Lamb, Byrne (Blacklock HT), Mutale (Richardson 72′), McCowan (Findlay HT), McGinn (Clark 77′).

Subs not used – Welsh, Kelly
