Dundee host Buckie Thistle in their first home game of the 2017/18 season and so we take a look at a player who has played for both clubs, Aaron Conway.
Born in Dundee on March 29th 1985, Conway started his career at Dundee United having coming through the youth ranks at Tannadice but he made just two substitute appearances for The Arabs in the final games of the 2002/03 and 2003/04 seasons.
At the start of the 2004/05 season United loaned Conway out to Clyde where he played 12 times, scoring once, before being released upon his return to Tannadice in January.
It was then that he joined the Dark Blues when Jim Duffy brought him to Dens on a short term deal and the striker made his Dundee debut the following month when he came off the bench to replace Fabian Caballero in a 4-0 defeat to Hibs at Easter Road.
With Cabellero, Tom McManus, Steve Lovell and John Sutton all competing for the striking berths at Dens, Conway found it a struggle to break into the side and made just one further appearance for The Dee as a 90th minute substitute against Rangers in March.
At the end of his Dundee contract Conway left Dens to join Forfar Athletic and scored once for The Loons in 12 appearances.
In 2006, Conway moved out of senior football and joined Carnoustie Panmure and he remained there until July 2009 when he joined East Fife, managed by former Dundee United colleague Stephen Crawford.
Conway stayed at Bayview for just 12 months where he scored once in his 27 appearances and in the summer of 2010 left Methil to join newly promoted Livingston. His stay in West Lothian was also for just 12 months where he again scored once in just 13 appearances and for the 2011/12 season he moved to Peterhead.
After a season with the Blue Toon, Conway moved into the Highland League where he joined Buckie Thistle. Conway was a big hit for the Victoria Park side and popular with the fans and it was a blow for The Jags when he announced in June 2014 that he was leaving to take up a job offshore.
Conway had originally planned to stay on at Buckie but commuting from his home in Dundee, coupled with the demands of his new job, meant he felt he had to leave Thistle and retire from the game.
Buckie manager Gary Hake said at the time, “He told me he wouldn’t go and play for anyone else, so instead he’s retired from the game. We’re obviously gutted to lose Aaron because he was a tremendous player for us, an absolute gem who hardly cost the club any money at all.
“But at the end of the day we know he has to put his family and his livelihood first, as sad as we are to see him go.”
Conway had even committed to signing an extended deal with The Jags midway through the season before he landed his job opportunity and Buckie would be the last club that the play for in a nomadic career.
